My name is Bee. Our mother died when I was sixteen and my sister was thirteen, and it was mostly the two of us after that. In 2019 she lost her uterus stopping a hemorrhage, at thirty, after wanting children since she was nine.
She asked me for years. I said yes in December 2023, at thirty-eight, because I kept remembering a thirteen-year-old in a black dress at our mother’s funeral holding my hand until it went numb.
She came to every appointment. At the anatomy scan she said, fast, looking at her husband Ade, « No. We want the surprise. » She put her hands on my stomach and cried. « That’s my miracle in there. »
Nell was born at 4:40 in the morning, six pounds nine, furious and pink and completely fine.
