I pressed my back against the wall, unable to move.
Eight years ago, I had held Lily against my chest for the first time and promised I would always protect her.
Now I was watching strangers fight to keep that promise for me.
“Mommy?”
The sound was barely audible.
I turned.
Lily’s eyes were half-open.
“Mommy,” she whispered again. “Am I going to die?”
Something inside me broke.
I rushed toward her, but a nurse gently stopped me.
