I stopped breathing for a second.

“Because you came to see me when you thought I had nothing left to give.”

That line hit harder than anything else in my entire life. Because it was true. I hadn’t come out of love. Not really. But I had gone, when everyone else in the family had stayed away.

I kept reading, my vision blurring at the edges. He told me where the bank was, which box, what documents I’d need to bring. And then, at the very end, one final sentence.

“The coat was the only thing they wouldn’t fight you for.”

I laughed. A broken, shaky laugh that slowly turned into something else entirely. Because suddenly, everything about him made sense all at once. The harshness. The distance. The way he never once let anything soft show through.
