My 8-year-old daughter sat silently through the will reading, waiting for her envelope just like the other grandchildren.

Daniel’s hand tightened around mine. I felt his whole body tremble, but he did not yell.

I did not yell either.

Mr. Coleman looked sharply at Patricia.

“Mrs. Whitaker, that is not what the will says.”

Patricia smiled faintly.
