The shame belonged to the people who closed the door.
Then Ruth looked at Kate and remembered why she had given her son and daughter-in-law that house in the first place.
It was supposed to be a place for family.
Not a place where family was rejected.
Kate listened as Ruth said she was going to undo it.
At first, Kate thought she meant the argument. She thought maybe Ruth wanted to confront them or demand an apology.
But Ruth meant something much bigger.
The house.
Kate reminded her that a gifted house could not simply be taken back.
Ruth only smiled.
