Gabriel opened a gray folder.

“The company’s earliest surviving bank record shows an opening balance of three hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars.”

Adrian shrugged. “That was seed funding.”

“Yes.”

“From private family resources.”

“That description is incomplete.”

Gabriel removed a yellowed transfer memorandum and placed it beneath the document camera. The page appeared on the large screen behind Adrian.

At the top was the name of my grandmother’s estate account. Beneath it was the amount: $325,000.00.

On the transfer line, typed in plain black letters, were the words:

INITIAL CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION FROM CLAIRE MARLOWE WHITMORE IN EXCHANGE FOR 40% FOUNDING EQUITY IN HELIXORA BIOMEDICAL SYSTEMS.
