My husband stood beside me, one hand resting on Amber’s shoulder. The bottle of wine he’d brought Grace was still sitting unopened on the sideboard.

« Liam called me. »

Liam’s voice was calm.

Grace, my mother-in-law (MIL), looked like she wanted to argue, but the man had already stepped inside.

Then he saw the dining room. More specifically, he saw the two chairs wrapped in thick, clear plastic.

Every other chair was uncovered.
