My daughter had just rung the hospital’s victory bell after two years of chemotherapy, and I thought the hardest chapter of our lives was finally over. But as we reached the hospital doors, her doctor came running after us and said, « Wait… I couldn’t keep it a private matter any longer. »

The hallway outside the pediatric oncology ward echoed with applause.

My daughter, Martha, still had both hands wrapped around the rope she’d just pulled. The brass bell swayed gently above her head, its bright sound lingering through the corridor like it refused to fade.

Nurses clapped. Parents cried. Doctors smiled in that quiet way people do after holding their breath for far too long.
