At my birthday dinner, I opened the card my parents handed me, expecting a real gift. Instead, there was only a $5 bill inside. Mom laughed, “Don’t spend it all in one place,” and everyone joined in while I sat silently, already counting every dollar they owed me

Just once, I wanted the evening to be about me.

Then my mother pushed a birthday card across the table.

Something about the look on her face immediately made me uneasy.

I opened it anyway, wearing the hopeful smile I had learned to fake around my family.
