He looked at me for a long second.
“You say that like it makes you less than someone.”
The words landed harder than I wanted them to.
I straightened up. “I need to get back to work.”
He raised one hand, not grabbing, not demanding. Just asking.
“Please. Sit for a minute.”
Every part of me said no.
Every part of me said walk away.
But something in his voice made me pause.
So I slid into the booth across from him, still holding my order pad like it might protect me.
