“Angela has HIV. Did you know?”
The color vanished from my husband’s face almost instantly, leaving his skin a sickly, translucent grey. The coffee cup in his hand trembled, dark liquid sloshing over the ceramic rim to stain the pristine marble of our kitchen island. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t offer a word of sympathy for my best friend. Instead, a panicked, primal terror hijacked his features. He muttered something incoherent about a sudden emergency at the construction site, grabbed his car keys with shaking fingers, and practically bolted out the front door.
