Then the impossible happened.
Raymond’s fingers twitched until they touched the blue blanket.
“Mr. Raymond?” I whispered softly into the quiet room.
His eyelids trembled.
One dark eye opened just enough to meet mine.
He was conscious.
He understood everything.
For the rest of the night, I learned to communicate with him through eye movements. One blink meant yes. Two meant no. Looking toward the door meant someone was approaching.
“Can you hear everything that people are saying around you?” I asked quietly.
One slow blink.
