3 Exercises to Relieve Sciatica Leg Pain: Practical and Effective

Although exercise cannot cure every cause of sciatica, gentle movements may help reduce discomfort, improve flexibility, and support mobility. The key is to start slowly and avoid movements that make symptoms worse.

1. Knee-to-Chest Stretch

This gentle stretch may help relieve lower-back tension and improve flexibility.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Slowly bring one knee toward your chest.
  • Hold the position for 10–20 seconds without forcing the movement.
  • Lower your leg gently and repeat with the other side.
  • Perform 2–3 repetitions on each side if comfortable.

Stop if the stretch increases pain traveling down your leg.

2. Gentle Piriformis Stretch

The piriformis muscle is located deep in the buttock. Stretching this area may help some people with buttock tightness associated with sciatic symptoms.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back with both knees bent.
  • Place one ankle over the opposite knee.
  • If comfortable, gently draw the supporting thigh toward your chest.
  • Hold for 15–20 seconds while breathing normally.
  • Release slowly and repeat on the other side.

Do not force the stretch or continue if it causes sharp pain, tingling, or worsening symptoms.

3. Gentle Walking

Walking is a simple way to remain active without putting excessive strain on your body. For many people with sciatica, short walks are more comfortable than sitting or lying down for long periods.
